What is CML
It's Easy to Get Lost In The Cancer World
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a blood cancer that starts in the blood stem cells of bone marrow. In CML, there are too many white blood cells. A chromosome change called the Philadelphia chromosome is found in CML. This happens when a peice of chromosome 9 and a piece of chromosome 22 break off and trade places with each other. The result is a fused genen called BCR-ABL 1.
White blood cells (leukocytes), which includes granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes.
Make exact copies of themselves.
Make new cells that have the potential to become blood cells
How Support Groups Can Help
Support groups bring together individuals facing similar challenges to share experiences, offer encouragement, and foster emotional support. Unlike friends or medical professionals, group members often understand firsthand what others are going through.
Support groups—such as those for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)—create a safe, empathetic space for patients, families, and caregivers. Participants exchange lived experience, coping strategies, and emotional insight, helping reduce feelings of isolation and build resilience, empowerment, and a sense of community.
Benefits of Support Groups:
- Emotional Relief: Sharing personal experiences can be cathartic and uplifting.
- Coping Skills Learn practical strategies such as journaling, meditation, and boundary-setting to manage stress and improve well-being.
- Community Connection: Build friendships with others who truly understand your journey.
- Insight & Inspiration: Gain new perspectives by hearing what’s working for others and discovering fresh approaches to challenges.
- Enhanced Communication: Improve dialogue between patients and physicians through shared experiences and mutual understanding.
- Education & Awareness: Benefit from occasional guest speakers who provide expert insights on CML-related topics and treatments.
CML Buster Family (CMLBF) Support Groups operate across four U.S. time zones, both in-person and online. Meetings are peer-led by patient experts, without offering medical advice. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and free of charge.
Online Groups: A flexible alternative to in-person meetings, ideal for those with travel or scheduling or logistical limitations. While virtual formats may limit nonverbal communication and warmth, they still offer meaningful connection and support.
Important Notes:
- Support groups are not a substitute for medical care.
- All shared information remains confidential.
- Respect, empathy, and tolerance are core values of every meeting.
For medical concerns, always consult a certified CML diagnosis and treatment.
